The Naked Lady Who Stood on Her Head: A Psychiatrist's Stories of His Most Bizarre Cases by Dr. Gary Small & Gigi Vorgan

I was very intrigued by this book because I am in college and majoring in Psychology. I have always been really interested in different stories as told by a psychiatrist. I had been looking forward to reading this book for quite some time and was finally able to do so. Needless to say, the book did not let me down. I found the authors stories to be fascinating and sometimes humorous. It makes me wonder what types of cases I might be involved in later on down the road when I begin my career in this field. I really enjoyed the fact that the diagnosis was explained in each case. I am still learning a lot about the psychology field so some of the terminology is still very new to me.

This book has actually inspired me to take a class in abnormal psychology, which I will be starting in about two weeks. I love the fact that Dr. Small invests a lot of his time in studying Alzheimer’s and dementia. These are two areas that interest me as well. All in all, I really enjoyed this book. However, it did take me a while to get through it. I think sometimes I needed to get away from “learning” for a little bit. Not only was I reading this book on psychology but I was also studying it in my classes. Sometimes too much of something isn’t always good. I am looking forward to reading more books similar to this one so that I can broaden my horizons in terms of the psychological field and I encourage those that are seeking a career in this field to pick up this book and enjoy some strange yet fascinating stories.

Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler

This book was a fast and fun read. The only downfall was that some of the stories Handler believed to be funny, were really not. There is a specific chapter that absolutely disgusts me and I'm sure those of you who haven't read it will recognize it when you come to it. I really didn't find that chapter to be funny at all. It mainly just made me sick to my stomach.

I have never read any of Handler's books until this one nor have I ever watched her on TV. I borrowed this book from a friend (thankfully I didn't purchase it). I think my humor in comparison to Handler's humor is completely different. The beginning of the book was great and made me laugh out loud. But as I continued on into the middle and the end of the book it was kind of bland and basically just boring.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

This is not the type of book that I would normally read. Seeing the movie trailer was actually the reason why I decided to read it. This book was beautifully written. It's filled with sadness and despair but also happiness and some parts are even humorous. Minny is probably my favorite character. I love her spirit. Plus, she likes to talk back to people that treat her badly. She stands up for herself where others sometimes don't. Miss Skeeter's character is inspirational and I love her as well. Her determination shines through her throughout this novel. I can't wait to watch the movie so that I can put faces to these wonderful characters.
